A ring of gain constitution is a type of ring that appears in NetHack. The default randomized appearance associated with it is "an opal ring".[1]

Generation

Wizards may be given a ring of gain constitution as one of the two random rings in their starting inventory.[2]

General stores and jewelers shops can sell rings of gain constitution.

Description

A hero putting on the ring of gain constitution alters their constitution by its enchantment while it is worn, up to a maximum of 25, and a ring that modifies the hero's constitution (i.e. it is not +0) is auto-identified when put on or removed.[3][4] The ring can be charged to increase its enchantment. Monsters will not wear this ring.

A hero eating the ring has a 13 chance of successfully absorbing its magic and gaining a temporary bonus or penalty to constitution based on the ring's enchantment[5][6]—this auto-identifies the ring if this bonus changes the hero's constitution, and lasts until the hero changes forms or returns to normal.[7]

Strategy

Rings of gain constitution can be generally useful early on for improving carrying capacity, and can be worn before the hero gains experience levels to improve their HP gains. As any value above 19 is functionally identical in most cases, heroes that reach their race's maximum have little need to boost the stat upon reaching that point.

History

The ring of gain constitution is first appears in NetHack 3.3.0. From this version to NetHack 3.4.3, including variants based on those versions, a ring of gain constitution of any enchantment can be used to drain levels and regain them for a virtually limitless amount of hit points—see the article on drain for gain for more details.

Messages

The water flow seems <lesser/greater> now.
You dropped a ring of gain constitution down a sink: "lesser" is used for rings with an enchantment below +0, and "greater" is used otherwise.

Variants

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, Flame Mages, Ice Mages and Necromancers may be given a ring of gain constitution as the random ring in their starting inventory.[8][9][10]
